Sarah Mazer

Sarah Mazer, age 93, gently passed away on March 29 at Hebrew Health Care, West Hartford, CT. Aunt Sarah was born in Ostrajohn, Russia, daughter of the late Esther and Shica Mazuritsky. When Aunt Sarah was two years old her family escaped from Russia, arriving in NYC, and eventually settling in Philadelphia, PA. Aunt Sarah worked in her family’s fish and fruit store throughout her adolescence. When she was 21, she moved to NYC, earned a degree in dietetics from community college and went on to manage large cafeterias (NYU, AT&T). Aunt Sarah was a New Yorker through and through. Her passions included cycling through Central Park, attending the opera at Lincoln Center and shopping at Zabars. Aunt Sarah was active in the early stages of the trade union movement. Aunt Sarah was married to Carlos Lopez. Aunt Sarah was devoted to her nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents, Aunt Sarah was predeceased by her siblings Sol Mazer, Gittel Mazer and Fannie Krems, many aunts, uncles and cousins and her friend and caretaker Beverly Green. Aunt Sarah is survived by her five nieces, nephews and spouses: Bette Myerson of West Harford, Helen Jacobson of Waterville, ME, Sheldon and Marjorie Krems of Poughkeepsie, NY, Ruth Krems of Hartford, and Ken and Carol Krems of Newton, MA. Also, twelve great-nieces and nephews, their spouses and children. The family extends their thanks to the devoted caregivers at Hebrew Health Care (especially Dr.Farber, Evelyn, Mirella, Pauline, Meney and Maxine) for their extreme kindness and skill. Thanks also to Masonicare Hospice (Mary K. and Jim C.) for their skillful end of life care. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 1 at 11:30am at Mt Sharon Cemetery in Springfield, PA.
