Philip Harvey Snyder

On Tuesday, June 16, 2009, Philip Harvey Snyder passed from this world peacefully, surrounded by family and friends. Phil, with the help of his wife, Barbara Jean, fought bravely against brain cancer for 2 1/2 years. He never let the cancer define who he was or how he would live; he lived with hope and a glad heart, and enjoyed every day. He is survived by his two grandchildren, Maia and Albert, who were the joy of his days, his son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Elana, of Albany, New York, and his daughter Rebecca, of Salem, Massachusetts. He leaves his mother, Jean Glazier Snyder, his brother, Marshall, his step-son, Jason Orach, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Phil is also survived by his first wife, Barbara L. Shor Snyder, of Glastonbury. Phil was born in Hartford on May 14, 1946 and lived on Westbourne Parkway with his parents, Albert and Jean Snyder, owners of Snyder?s Supermarket. He was a graduate of Weaver High School and Bryant College. Phil worked for a time for the Department of Defense at Pratt & Whitney, and then joined Ernst & Ernst now Ernst & Young, where he was a manager of audit and tax services for financial institutional clients. In 1981, Phil left Ernst and established his own firm in Hartford, which became Snyder & Haller, now part of Whittlesey & Hadley, P.C. He was a long-time member and past President of Temple Beth-Tefilah in East Hartford, and Treasurer of University Associates. He was also a member of Probus, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Connecticut Society of CPAs. For over twenty years, Phil and his second wife, Barbara, worked alongside each other as they shared their vocation of accounting, and pursued their passions of photography, travel, theater and food. They were married in 2005. Phil enjoyed developing his own photographs, and continued to use film and his medium format camera. Most recently, they drove across country, from Seattle to Hartford. He was a barbeque aficionado, and spent many weekends grilling or smoking, to the delight of all who dined with him. The family will observe period of mourning, at the home of his brother, Marshall Snyder, at 35 Vardon Road, West Hartford, on Friday and Saturday. Services will be Friday June 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the Molloy Funeral Home 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford.
