Mary "Mona" Reilly

Mary “Mona” (Smith) Reilly, 85, West Hartford, CT died peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, as a result of kidney disease. Mona was born on June 4, 1936 in Balbriggan, County Dublin, Ireland to her loving parents, Mary and Patrick Smith. Along with her parents, she is predeceased by her siblings, Thomas “Tommy”, Patrick “Eamon,” Patricia “Trushie,” Catherine “Kitty,” Elizabeth “Babby,” and James “Jim” and is survived by her beloved sister Bridget “Olive” Marshall. Aside from Olive, she leaves her dear husband of 61 years, John Reilly, her adored son Edward Reilly and his wife JoAnne, her treasured daughter Veronica Maas and her husband Wayne, her treasured daughter Rosemary Buttigieg and her husband Kevin, and cherished grandchildren Ryan Maas, Patricia Maas, Catherine Righenzi and her husband Paul Righenzi, John Maas, Kyle Buttigieg, Conor Buttigieg, and Jack Buttigieg, and many beloved nieces and nephews. After working at Smyth & Co. in Balbriggan, Mona emigrated to the United States in 1958. She worked at Franklin Simon & Co. in Manhattan and soon met her husband at a dance at City Center. They fell in love and married on December 26, 1959 and eventually moved to Long Island. When Mona’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was the norm for the time but even by the standards of the day Mona was an exceptional wife and mother. After her husband’s retirement they moved to West Hartford where they enjoyed the lifestyle that they had always dreamed of. Keeping and caring for her home were what made Mona happy. She spent many hours contemplating color schemes and decorating options; decorating and shopping were pure joy for her. She was most proud of her children and her seven grandchildren and recently was overjoyed to find out that she would soon become a great grandma. During the long and insolating days of COVID, her husband, her children, her grandchildren and long phone calls with her sister Olive were her lifeline. Mona will be remembered for her compassion, wisdom, strength, beauty, dignity, wit, and her dedicated love for her family. She will be deeply missed.
