Laurence Arnold Cushman Jr.

Laurence Arnold Cushman, Jr., 86, of West Hartford, Connecticut, passed away on October 22, 2018. He was a devoted husband of 61 years to the late Oris (Stockwell) Cushman. Larry was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Dr. Laurence A. Cushman, Sr. and Catherine (Unsworth) Cushman. A Hall High School graduate, he served as a military police officer in the 9th Infantry Division stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Larry returned to Connecticut and obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut in agriculture. He then began his career at Michigan State University as a 4-H Youth Agent for 28 years serving Osceola and Berrien Counties in Michigan. While in this role, he completed his master's degree in education. Larry received many honors during his career including the National Distinguished Service Award given by the 4-H National Association and the Distinguished Faculty Award from Michigan State. Following his retirement in 1988, he and Oris relocated to Calusa Lakes in Nokomis, Florida. There they were members Venice Presbyterian Church. In retirement, he enjoyed the company of friends and many rounds of golf, including multiple holes-in-one. In recent years, he returned to West Hartford where he enjoyed his time with family and friends. Larry enjoyed his many four-legged companions over the years. Larry is survived by his daughter, Lynn Wronker and her husband Steve; his son, Laurence Cushman III and his wife, Cyndy; his grandchildren; Wesley Cushman (Jennifer), Geoffrey Crandall (Sara), Megan, Hannah, Paige, Kaitlyn, and Jordyn Cushman. He also is a proud great-grandfather to Hal and Jackson. He also leaves Debbie and Larry Elman and his nieces Nancy Cushman and Cathy Perkins. Besides his wife he was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Bill and Betty Cushman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Michigan 4-H Foundation, 446 West Circle Drive, Room 160, East Lansing, MI 48824 or to the American Heart Association. Calling hours will take place Thursday, October 25th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, CT 06119. Funeral services will take place at Molloy Funeral Home, Friday, October 26th, at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will take place with full military honors at Sarasota National Cemetery, Monday, October 29th, at 1:30pm.
