Joan Marie Mackas

Joan Marie Mackas, 89 of West Hartford and Hamden, CT. beloved wife to the late Joseph Mackas passed peacefully on June 26, 2021 at Yale/New Haven Hospital. She was born on February 23, 1932 in Hartford, CT. Joan was the daughter of John C. Blackall, an attorney, Insurance Commissioner in the State of CT., State Senator in Hartford and Mae Kelly Blackall an Educator and devoted Mother to Joan. She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy, Class of 1950 and received her Associates Degree from Mary Mount University Arlington, Virginia in 1952. Joan worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles for the State of Connecticut for 12 years. Joan married Joseph Mackas in 1965 at St. Timothy's Church in West Hartford, Connecticut. They were happily married for 51 years. Joan was a dedicated volunteer at Norfeldt Elementary School PTA and St. Timothy's Church as she was very devoted to her Faith. She truly enjoyed her years as a Nursery School Teacher where she was creative and passionate with her students. Joan was a very proud Mother and adored her daughters immensely. She was an active member of the West Hartford Senior Center. Joan's favorite place was summer days at the beach in Madison, CT. These fondest memories is where she spent many summer vacations growing up with her immediate family. A tradition she carried on with her husband Joe and daughters Carolyn and Nancy. Joan enjoyed gardening, playing the piano, BINGO, outdoor concerts and spending quality time with family and friends. We would like to thank the Associates at Benchmark Senior Living at Hamden. Joan resided at Benchmark for the past 5 years. While there she truly enjoyed the loving care, friendships and activities. Joan is survived by her daughters Carolyn Mackas Thompson and husband David of Huntington Beach, CA; Nancy Mackas Bonomo and husband David of Cheshire, CT; her grandchildren Luke and Shaun Thompson; Joshua and Lily Bonomo; her several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Joan is preceded in death by her parents John C. and Mae K. Blackall; her sister Frances Blackall Blanchfield; her brothers Reverend John C. Blackall and Reverend L. Randall Blackall. Friends may call at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 5-7p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford, CT 06117. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Flowers are welcome and the family requests memorial donations be made to American Cancer Society.
