Janaki Sookram

Janaki Sookram passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord on July 12,2006. Janaki was born January 3, 1946 to James and Rosie Singh Sookram. Early years were spent in Trinidad with sister Dollina and brothers David, Lalo, William, and Dominique. She was a very dedicated aunt, loving her many nieces and nephews, Farah, Pinky, Elizabeth, Richard, Chris, Tony, David Jr, and Terrence. Also, many grand and great grand nieces and nephews. At age 19, she moved to the USA and educated herself. She worked first as a clerk at an airline, and next as a lab technician. In 1980 she started work at St Francis Hospital and Medical Center in the Admitting Department. From there, in 1982 She began a long career as an executive secretary in a new service, The Diabetes Care Center at SFHMC until her retirement in 2013. Janaki took great pride in her work. She acted as a patient advocate, a medical assistant to the doctors, a liaison with the hospital CEO's, an active co-worker, and networker among hospital employees. If you needed it, Janaki could find it! Outside of her work, Janaki had many friends in the Vernon, CT area. She was a devoted member of Vernon Assembly of God, and taught religious education to small children. She referred to them as "her children". She attended many events with the families of her co- workers in the Diabetes Care Center. She traveled to Canada to visit her brother David and wife Ann Sookram, and to Trinidad to visit family but also had many family members sleeping on the floor of her apartment as they came to be with her. Janaki lived in Vernon after her retirement, tending to potted tomato and pepper plants at her apartment and visiting friends. In July, 2019 after several illnesses, she entered Windsor Rehabilitation Center, where she resided until her death. There she became a favorite of residents and staff with her smile, hugs and friendly greeting "Hi Momma!" A kind, compassionate, caring, friendly person. Janaki will be missed. Funeral Services will be Monday, July 27, 2026 with Visitation from 10-11 am followed by a service at 11 am, at Molloy Funeral Home 906 Farmington Ave. W. Hartford.
