Jack Carlock Laflin

Jack Carlock Laflin, born June 3, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY and passed away on February 3, 2012 at the age of 89. He leaves his beloved wife Jo Baruth Cohan Cohn Laflin and step-daughter Paula-Rae Cohn, dear sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Henry Seltzer of West Hartford, brother-in-law Robert Cohan of Farmington, close friend of 40 years Emmanuel Forde, and special friend Steven Lucca. He graduated from Polytechnic Prepatory Country Day School in Brooklyn, NY and Princeton University cum laude class of 1943. He served as alumni secretary for 27 years. Some of his fondest times were attending class reunions with his wife Jo, and the annual Princeton vs. Yale game and tailgating. Jack was a veteran serving as a Pharmacists Mate, stationed in Australia. He was a longtime member of Wampanoag Country Club, and a loyal member of the Hartford Host Lions Club, serving four times as President-Bulletin, chairman of the fund raising pancake breakfast, he was a Knight of Pythias, and a Regent. Jack was a skilled bridge player and played twice a week at the senior center with friend Lars Guldager. Jack cherished his Wednesday night poker game which he would host. His poker buddies included, Jeff Anopolsky, Marty Gould, Gene Wittenberg, Sam Tellar, Elliot Solomon, Steve Lucca and Jeff Solomon. Jack could always be found with a book or a crossword puzzle in hand, his love of reading would lead him to later author books, and create crosswords. He worked for many years as the sports editor for the former Channel 18, outside of work he could be found enthusiastically cheering on the Yankee's and Giants. Jack and Jo traveled extensively on many cruises to Alaska, Russia, tours of Europe and the Orient, keeping a journal of each stop, and allowing them to relive the trips and fill their house with many memories. The family would like Jack to be remembered for the kind human being he was, and for how he tried to bring laughter and smiles wherever he went. They would also like to thank the staff at Hughes Health and Rehab for the kind and considerate care they gave to Jack, with a special mention to Richard. A graveside service will be held on Monday at 4:00 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel Cemetery, corner of Ward and Affleck St., Hartford. A reception will follow.
