Dr. John B. LeRoy

Dr. John B. LeRoy of Eastham, MA died of natural causes, at the age of 87, on April 22, 2011, after a brief period of declining health. Dr. LeRoy was born on Sept. 17, 1923 in Hartford, CT. After graduating from Hartford Public High School, he then attended the University of Connecticut from 1943 to 1946, where he played varsity football and studied for a career in medicine. Following his graduation, he attended Yale University?s School of Medicine, where he was engaged in early research on human DNA. He received his M.D. in 1949 and completed his internship and residency requirements in 1950. In June of 1949, he married Clare Wojciechowski, whom he had first met at the University of Connecticut. He returned to UConn as a physician in 1951, and in a few years he was appointed the Director of Student Health Services. While employed at UConn, he served as team physician for football and basketball, and he maintained a keen interest in sports medicine throughout his career. ?Doc? began his lifelong passion for playing the trumpet while in his teens, when he helped to support his family by playing with ?Big Bands? in Hartford. He performed professionally for over six decades. He was also known to have a very inquisitive and creative mind, pursuing a variety of interests including creative writing, photography, cooking and gardening. Dr. LeRoy leaves behind his family, whom he considered his greatest legacy of love: Laura LeRoy of Scottsdale, AZ; John B. LeRoy of Phoenix, AZ; Kathleen DeZenzo and her husband Frank of Leverett, MA; Nicholas LeRoy of Sagamore Beach, MA; and Louise Peters and her husband Steve of Orleans, MA. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, when Clare died of cancer in 1997. Dr. LeRoy is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, April 30 at 12 Noon in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Rd, Bloomfield, CT. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Cancer Society, PO box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123. Molloy Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.
