Donald A. Nigro

Donald A. Nigro, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home in West Hartford, surrounded by his family, July 18, 2011. Born October 14, 1918 in Syracuse, NY, he leaves his loving wife, Ilse, of 44 years; his sons, Mark of Bedford, NH, Peter of West Hartford, and Stephen of Acton, MA; daughter-in-laws Wanda, Elaine and Alycen; grandchildren: Matthew, Julie, Sam, Kate, Ava and Andrew, who always made him smile. He was predeceased by four brothers: Alfred, Art, Lawrence and Jerry, and one sister, Florence. After graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1940, Don began work in engineering at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford. In 1954 he completed the Alfred P. Sloan Fellows Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. Don was promoted to President of the Manufacturing Division of P&W in 1976, and in 1979 assumed the added responsibilities of Corporate Vice President, Manufacturing, for United Technologies. Despite retirement in 1983, Don continued to stay busy leading and nurturing small businesses and sharing his many years of experience to the great benefit of those around him. He was always compassionate and eager to help others. Don was a very devoted family man. He always enjoyed the various family activities such as ski vacations and trips to the ocean and the New Hampshire Lakes. His family will always cherish the great memories of the time they spent together. In more recent years, he took special interest in the lively activities of his six grandchildren, who always kept him in good spirits. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 22, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St. West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford. Friends may call Thursday, July 21, from 4:00 ? 7:00 p.m. at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave, West Hartford.
