Bimalin Lahiri

Dr. Bimalin Lahiri, born September 22, 1937, in Kolkata, India, passed away at home on February 2, 2026. For over five decades, he proudly called West Hartford, Connecticut his home. He lived a remarkable life defined by service, deep compassion, and unwavering integrity—leaving a lasting imprint on medicine in Connecticut and on the many people who were fortunate enough to know him. A man of duty in every sense, he also served honorably in the United States Army Reserves. In 1964, Dr. Lahiri arrived in Hartford to complete his internal medicine residency at Saint Francis Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Yale University. After his training, he returned to Saint Francis, where he devoted more than fifty years to caring for patients and strengthening the medical community, retiring in 2019. At Saint Francis, Dr. Lahiri helped shape the future of critical care. He was instrumental in the development of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and served as Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He was widely respected for his clinical excellence, calm presence, and steadfast leadership. Families will remember him for the care he provided during life’s most difficult moments, and colleagues will remember him as a physician who held himself—and everyone around him—to the highest standard, always in service of the patient. One of the most defining parts of Dr. Lahiri’s life was his dedication to teaching and mentorship. He took great pride in training young doctors and guiding medical students, and he was honored over the years with numerous teaching awards from UCONN and the Yale University School of Medicine. He did more than teach medicine—he helped shape physicians, leaving behind generations of doctors who carry forward his values: discipline, humility, and compassion. Above all, Dr. Lahiri was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Trudy, his devoted companion and greatest support through every chapter of life. He leaves behind his son Thomas (Julie) Lahiri, his daughter Monika (George) Selmont, and his four cherished grandchildren—Luke, Nate, Kevin, and Katie—who brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sister, Tripti Moitra, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his mother (Niva), father (Amulya), and brother (Amalin). Dr. Lahiri will be remembered not only for what he accomplished, but for who he was: principled, brilliant, deeply compassionate, and guided by a quiet sense of duty. He changed lives through the patients he cared for, the physicians he mentored, and the family he loved so deeply. His legacy will live on in the halls of Saint Francis Hospital, throughout the medical community, and in the hearts of all those who knew him.
