Ann U. Tiernan

The family of Ann Theresa (Uricchio) Tiernan, beloved wife and 66-year devoted wife and steadfast partner of Peter R. Tiernan has passed away at home after a valiant yet peaceful struggle against cancer. She was the youngest daughter of the late William and Mary (Donodio) Uricchio. Born and raised in Hartford’s “Southend”, Ann graduated from Bulkeley High School and entered the business world, as a claims agent at the former Phoenix Insurance Company. She and Peter were married in June 1958, and she remained at home until 1978 while raising their three children. In 1979 she returned to the working world at The Travelers Insurance Company for 13 years and then as a part time clerk at the CT Department of Revenue Services and The City of Hartford during various election periods. She was a resident of West Hartford since 1966. Ann enjoyed 42 happy years on Cape Cod where family, friends and neighbors were often treated to her hospitality and where she embraced the seashore community, especially in summer and autumn months. She enjoyed entertaining and was a gracious hostess. She liked to travel and toured many European countries, as well as cruises to Caribbean and Canadian destinations. Dining out was always a special pursuit. She was a member of the former West Hartford Dames and a volunteer at The House of Bread in Hartford. Ann and friends from her early Grammer School years were in frequent contact with each other and enjoyed their luncheon outings at local restaurants. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter MaryBeth (Matthew) Wabrek of Canaan, CT, by her son Philip (Carol) Tiernan of Windsor, CT and by her son James (Amy) Tiernan of Pawcatuck, CT. She leaves three grandchildren: Annalisa Deloy, Caitlin (Josh) Temko and Zachary (Pooja Singh) Smith. She was gifted with eight beautiful great grandchildren: Angelina, Brayden, Carter, Charlotte, Madelyn, Desmond, Julian, and Hunter. She is also survived by her sister Nancy (Mrs. Lawrence Shiembob) of Glastonbury, CT and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ann was predeceased by her sister Marie, (Mrs. Robert J. Murtha) of Wethersfield, and by brothers, Dr. William Uricchio of PA, and Mr. Nicholas Uricchio. Ann was also predeceased by her fourth grandchild, Jennifer Marie, of Newington. There will be no calling hours as was Ann’s wish, however her family will greet callers in the vestibule of The Church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford, welcoming them at 9 :30 a.m., prior to a funeral Mass at 10:00 am. on Thursday, August 22. Her burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. All are invited to a reception at Rockledge Grill, 289 South Main St., West Hartford immediately follow her services.
