Vilma B. Szilagyi, 91, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2018 at St. Mary’s Home in West Hartford, Connecticut. Born August 10, 1927 in Deg, Hungary, she was the daughter of Janos and Maria (Pethes) Balogh. In 1956 she left Hungary and eventually arrived in the United States and settled in Hartford. On August 10, 1957 she married the love of her life, László (Leslie) Szilagyi. She and her family resided in Hartford and West Hartford, Connecticut for most of her life. Vilma spent her working life in the insurance industry retiring from the Covenant Insurance Company. She enjoyed gardening, cooking fantastic Hungarian meals, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and entertaining friends. She was a strong, passionate, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, with a sharp wit willing to share her opinion on almost any topic. She will always be remembered for her caring nature, her strong unwavering love for her family, and her exquisite style. She loved to travel and enjoyed frequent trips to her native Hungary to visit family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie. She has missed him dearly ever since. She leaves her two sons, Frank J. Szilagyi and his wife Meghan, of West Hartford and John L. Szilagyi and his wife Debbie of North Granby. She also leaves behind her granddaughter Kate (Szilagyi) Nett and her husband Ben, great-grandchildren Logan and Savannah Nett and grandchildren Jennifer and Nicole Szilagyi and step-grandchildren Mackenzie and Nolan Tibball. She loved them all so much. She is survived by many relatives and friends in Hungary including her cherished twin sister, Magda Ronchetti. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2018 from 10:00 –11:30 am at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, immediately followed by a memorial service at the funeral home. A celebration of Vilma’s life will be held at the Rockledge Grille, 289 S. Main Street, West Hartford following the services at Molloy's. The family extends our sincere appreciation to the dedicated staff at St. Mary’s Home for the compassionate care, comfort and support extended to Vilma. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vilma’s name to the Hungarian Cultural Society of Connecticut, 762 Bethany Mountain Road, Cheshire, CT 06410 (www.hcsc.us).
