Dorothy A. Simon of West Hartford passed away peacefully on Monday April 18th at St Mary Home, she was 93. She was an accomplished teacher, theater enthusiast and caring mother. Originally from Forest Hills NY, she attended the Mary Louis Academy, was a graduate of Adelphi University and received a master’s degree from Central Connecticut State University. She was married to her devoted husband of 65 years, James Simon, who predeceased her. Together they survived Hurricane Diane in Wickford Rhode Island in 1955 and lived in Oak Ridge Tennessee from 1955-1958 before settling in Windsor for 55 years. They moved to West Hartford in 2013 to become residents of the McAuley Community. Dorothy was a dedicated teacher at the John F. Kennedy elementary school in Windsor from 1968-1992 where she pioneered the partnership teaching program. She loved the theater, was a long-time member of the Windsor Jesters and served as president in the 1970’s, directed children’s theater and the travel theater group. She was also a member of the Windsor Women’s Club at St. Gabriel’s. Later in life she spent more time on flower arranging that she enjoyed so much, even working a short time at a florist shop after retiring from teaching. She had many great friends who all supported each other and kept in close touch throughout the years. Above all, her family was most important to her, she always looked forward to visits and phone calls to hear the latest “goings on” from everyone. She was a dynamic lady who will be missed. Dorothy is survived by her four children: James Simon and his wife Nancy of Vernon CT, Joanne Mantarian and husband Brian of Newbury MA, Kathryn Thompson and husband William of Billerica MA, and Robert Simon and wife Margaret of Shelton CT. She was also the proud grandmother to 8 wonderful grandchildren. Private services will be held for immediate family members with her burial at Mount Saint Benedict cemetery. The family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at the Nightingales, specifically those who provided daily care, for their attentiveness and concern for Dorothy.
