Bruce Hector

April 26, 1933 - July 12, 2016

Bruce Malcolm Hector was received into God's heavenly choir of angels on July 12, 2016. He was born April 26, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York and was lovingly adopted by Ralph and Katherine Hector and their two sons Bern and Ralph Jr. He is survived by an extended family of nieces Dale Lara of Rockford, Illinois, Jean Sample of Michigan, Judy Hector and Pamela Hector of Plant City, Florida, Lynne Keena of South Carolina and nephew Kenneth Hector of Miami, Florida. Bruce was known as a gifted musician and leader. His music ministry has been a blessing and has facilitated the spread of the Word of God through his spiritual connection to music. He inspired many generations of people with his musical gifts as an organist, teacher, and Minister of Music. After receiving a Masters of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, Bruce served as organist and choir director at the First Congregational Church of Farmington, Connecticut. He moved in 1965 to the First Baptist Church of West Hartford as Minister of Music where he remained for the next 47 years. His music touched the souls of many who were privileged to have known him. Concurrently he served 25 years as organist in Temple Sinai in Newington, Connecticut and he taught music at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut for almost 50 years. He also provided musical direction for local theater groups including Oval in the Grove, Mark Twain Masqueraders, Myth Farmington, Windsor Jesters, Wethersfield Players, and the New Britain Repertory. Bruce often attended the annual American Baptist music conference at Green Lake, Wisconsin and enjoyed stopover to see his niece Dale and her daughters Whitney and Jaclyn after each conference. In his later years, Bruce enjoyed visits and daily phone calls from his niece Judy. He was grateful for the visits from his many friends in the community and from First Baptist Church. He was especially thankful for his home health aide, Amin Rakhimov, who cared for him 24/7 for 3 years as his health declined due to Alzheimer's disease. A Memorial Service in celebration of his life will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 11 AM at the First Baptist Church 90 N. Main St. West Hartford, Connecticut. Donations may be made to The Memorial Gifts Fund of the First Baptist Church.
