Adele Broitman

June 20, 1927 - September 18, 2017

Adele Russak Broitman of Hartford, formerly of Bloomfield CT, was born June 20th, 1927 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Tani and Chevia (Savage) Russak. She was the youngest of four children and was predeceased by her brother Leo Russak, her sisters Betty Saitz and Bernice Broitman, as well as ex-husband Jack Broitman. She died peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family on September 18th at age 90. She leaves her daughters, Tina Kane and Gena Hunt, son-in-law Randall Kane, grandchildren Loren Brown, Erin Day, Eric Hunt, Emily Kane and Jonathan Kane, great grandchildren Camden and Mila Brown, Levi and Brynley Day, as well as nieces and nephews, and dear friends near and far. Adele led an accomplished and unusual life. She was a painter, sculptor and potter, photographer, and clown. She traveled to Mexico, Spain, Iceland, India, Russia, Greece, India, and elsewhere in the US as well as spending time as an antique dealer and an art class administrator. She was a Jew, a Buddhist, teacher, student, reader, writer, poet, individual and iconoclast. She was a daughter, a sister, a mother, wife, ex-wife, and friend. A seminal event in her life was attending Camp Wo-Chi-Ca (Workers Children’s Camp) in the early 1940s. While there she met not only her future husband, but many cultural luminaries including Paul Robeson and Pearl Primus. The impact of the camp stayed with her throughout her life. Adele wanted to be remembered for having taught at the Madison Street Settlement, as well as having gallery shows in New York around CT, and having taught many workshops bringing art into the lives of all she encountered. She lived a life surrounded by and infused with her art, and left hundreds of pieces for us to remember her by. She was a member of Karma Thegsum Choling and leaves many friends across the world from her years of practice. A memorial in her honor will be held Sunday, October 8th at 1:30 PM at the Unitarian Meeting House 50 Bloomfield Ave, Hartford. Please come celebrate her life, and in memory of the light she shed on this earth, wear bright colors. Memorial donations can be made to Hartford KTC, 157 Elizabeth Street, Hartford, CT 06105.
