Virginia Marie Sullivan

Virginia Marie Sullivan, 94, beloved wife of Arthur D. Sullivan, of West Hartford, passed on to eternal life on Thursday, September 12, 2024 at Avon Health Center. Born in Woodside, Queens, NY, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Magonigle) Sullivan, she raised her family in Huntington, NY and then made her home in Hawley, PA for 23 years, before moving to West Hartford in 2013. Virginia graduated from Rosemont College with both a BA in English and a Masters Degree in 18th Century British Literature from Columbia University. Her career was devoted to the field of teaching. She began her career as a high school English teacher, which is where she met her beloved husband, followed by working as a professor of English where she taught technical writing at the Farmingdale State College (in Long Island, NY). Despite her commendable teaching endeavors, her primary priority was to be a wonderful mother to her four children. Virginia was a faithful, caring and loving wife and mother and grandmother. Everyone who met her could sense her intelligence, zest for fun, generosity, kindness and concern for others. She will be deeply missed, and is survived by her loving children: Virginia Gilmour and her husband Dan of West Hartford, Kathleen Kelton of Brewster, NY, Joan Sullivan and her husband John of Philadelphia, PA, and Arthur Sullivan Jr., of Forest Hills, NY. She also leaves behind her two nieces and nephew; Peggy Howell, MaryEllen Quinlan, and John Sullivan, her brother-in-law, Edgar Sullivan, of Scotch Plains, NJ; and his family; grandchildren, Danielle Creem and Ryan Gilmour, Jonathan and Michael Kelton; and three great-grandchildren: Reid and Brooke Kelton and Mila Creem. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, (September 18, 2024) at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Calling hours are Wednesday (September 18) from 10-11 at the Church.
