Timothy L. Curran, MD

Timothy L. Curran, MD, beloved husband of the late Mary Earley Curran peacefully died at his home on August 28, 2011, weeks shy of his 98th birthday. Born in Boston to his Irish immigrant parents, Timothy and Mary Curran, he graduated from Boston College in 1934 and Boston University Medical School in 1939. During WWII, Dr. Curran served in the U.S. Army Air Forces Medical Corps as a flight surgeon in Africa, Sicily and Italy. In 1946, he joined St. Francis Hospital Staff and opened his ear nose and throat practice in Hartford. For the next 40 years, he appreciated the privilege of knowing and caring for his many patients. Dr. Curran was a founding parishioner of St. Timothy's Church in West Hartford, CT. He was a long time member of Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford where he enjoyed the pleasure, frustration and camaraderie of the golf game. He also was a member of Mariner Sands Country Club in Stuart Florida, and the oldest member of Avon VFW, Post 3272. Dr. Curran was an avid gardener who shared his vegetable harvest and his signature tomato jelly with patients, friends and neighbors. During his retirement, Dr. Curran penned the story of his early life in Boston, his military service, and his love of medicine in his autobiography The Joys and Tears of a Doctor. Dr. Curran leaves behind his children Timothy Jr. and his wife Dolores of Avon, CT, John and his wife Terry of Sudbury, MA, Elizabeth and her husband Craig of Mesa, AZ, as well as grandchildren Tess of Cambridge, MA, and Nell and her husband Kevin of Menlo Park, CA. He was predeceased by his brothers John and Francis, and his sisters Mary Curran McGunnigle, and Rita Curran Sands. Friends are invited to share in the celebration of his life on Saturday Sept. 3rd in the Church of St. Timothy 1116 No. Main St. West Hartford, CT 06117 beginning with calling hours at 10:00 a.m. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. His internment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford with full military honors.
