Stuart Sakovich

Stuart Sakovich, 67, died peacefully early Tuesday morning July 11 at home in West Hartford, Connecticut in the arms of his wife and soulmate, Judy Lewis, and the care of his dear friend Bette Gebrian. He was surrounded by the love of family and friends. Stuart was born on October 2, 1948 in New Haven, Connecticut to Fred and Lola (Frey) Sakovich. He was predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law, Thelma, Jack and Margaret Lewis. He is survived by his wife, Judy Lewis, his brother Wayne Sakovich, and many cousins as well as an amazing family of friends around the world. Stuart grew up in Hamden, Connecticut where he attended school, played baseball and otherwise tried to engage in his favorite passions of science, monsters, movies and reading in spite of pressures to be outside playing with the other boys. He graduated from the University of Connecticut and began an eclectic and wonderful career managing bookstores, bands, working in a recording studio, a bank, and then primarily accounting. In 1984 he met Judy at his studio’s party and it was love at first sight for them both. They married in Sri Lanka in 1987 and traveled the world together. Stuart and Judy were a perfect team—both complementing each other’s talents. He made movies of Judy’s public health work in rural Sri Lanka as well as filmed deforestation in protected forests. He filmed family life in rural Haiti and had a real eye for photography and people. He was a tireless editor of many articles and books. Stuart was renowned for his wry sense of humor, catching people off guard and then sharing in the laughter. He was sensitive and kind to every person and creature, naming the squirrels and chipmunks in the yard, even geckos in our apartment in Sri Lanka, and carrying spiders out of the house. He was a renaissance man who had passion and extensive knowledge about sports, music, film, art, physics, astronomy, history and geography. He enjoyed traveling (but not the long flights), and had many friends from all parts of the globe. He was a classic gentle man who will be greatly missed.
