Sara E. Thal

Sara (Bass) Thal, 68, beloved wife of W. Fred Thal, D.D.S. died peacefully at home on April 22. Sara was born in Evansville, Indiana and spent her youth in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Mary Marriott Bass and Herschel L. Bass. After graduating from Washington University in St. Louis she and Fred lived in London, England where she worked at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine for two years before settling in Connecticut. She has been a resident of West Hartford, CT since 1983. She had a 27 year career in basic medical research and medical education at the University of Connecticut Health Center. In the midst of this career she earned a Master of Science degree from UConn in Adult Education. After retirement she served as an event planner for three years at UConn School of Law. Sara loved to travel. She was known for her spirit of adventure, epitomized by a three month, 18,000 mile automobile trip from Connecticut to Alaska and back, visiting friends and relatives along the way, keeping to “blue highways” and seeing our beautiful country from ground level. And no, she was not “packing heat“ in her glove box or purse. Sara was an avid and accomplished quilter. One of her lasting legacies will be the multiple hand-made quilt works of art that she created for friends and family. She also loved reading and playing bridge. Her favorite bridge bid was three NO TRUMP. Sara is survived by her husband, W. Fred Thal of West Hartford, CT, her daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Jordon Weddle and their two children, Owen and Andrew, of Tonasket, WA, her son David Thal and daughter-in-law Nhi Tran, and their two children, Hugo and Leo Thal, of Fairﬁeld, CT, and her brother Harry M. Bass, his wife, Jaci Hafner, and their son, Luke Bass of Tulsa, OK. A celebration of Sara’s life will be held at a time and place to be announced.
