Richard J. Hamlin

Richard J. Hamlin, age 88, of West Hartford, died peacefully February 21, 2018. Dick was predeceased by his wonderful wife of 64 years, Char. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen and son-in-law Gary Galanto; his son Thomas and daughter-in-law Linda Hamlin; and his daughter Suzanne and son-in-law John LaBrie. He is “Papa” to his eleven wonderful grandchildren: Jeff, Julia, Samantha, Emily, Adam, Ben, Maggie, Libby, Max, Hayden, and Evan; and two great grandchildren: Walter and John. His nephew and nieces, Mike, Colleen and Kim and their families also survive him. Dick was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Theresa Hamlin; his son, John Hamlin; his brother James and sister-in law Carol Hamlin; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Alexander. Dick was born on August 18, 1929 in Utica, New York and grew up in Morris, New York. He received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his Master of Science in Industrial Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dick served in the US Navy on active duty as a Line Officer on destroyers. Dick enjoyed his work. For most of his professional career he was involved with the manufacture, sale and use of computers and computer-related services. Dick’s second act was as a faculty member at Rensselaer at Hartford School of Management, fulfilling a long held goal. Family and friends were a very important part of Dick’s life. He and Char had a beautiful life together. Their strong and loving marriage was a source of strength and joy. Dick loved to read. He instilled in his children the love of learning; to be inquisitive and curious. Dick had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing practical jokes on his family and friends. A funeral mass will be held at The Church of Saint Helena, 30 Echo Lane in West Hartford on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 10:00 AM. A reception in the church hall will follow the service.
