Richard A. Garibaldi, M.D.

Richard A. Garibaldi, M.D., 67, of West Hartford, CT, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died on September 3, 2009, of colon cancer. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 23, 1942, to the late Alfred and Margaret Garibaldi. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lorraine Willoth Garibaldi, his children Karen Garibaldi, M.D., Hartford, CT, Mrs. Christine Garibaldi D'Arcy and her husband Michael, West Hartford, CT, Mrs. Susanne Garibaldi Popeo and her husband Paul, Needham, MA, and Richard M. Garibaldi and his partner Joseph Rossi, Hartford CT, and nine grandchildren: Eamonn, Brendan, and Maeve D'Arcy, Christine, Katie, Caroline, and Kelsey Popeo, and Isabella and Xavier Garibaldi. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Burchill, of Falmouth, Massachusetts. He was the James E.C. Walker/PHS Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center, former Chairman of the Department of Medicine, hospital epidemiologist, and Special Advisor to the State Department of Public Health. A significant figure in the field of infectious disease study, prevention, and control, Dr. Garibaldi played leadership roles in many of the professional organizations which shape academic medicine and graduate medical education throughout the nation, including the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine, and others. Most recently, Dr. Garibaldi served as Special Advisor to the Department of Public Health setting Connecticut policy concerning the mitigation of transmission of H1N1 type influenza. He authored more than 80 articles in the medical literature and more than 20 books and book chapters in the disciplines of infectious disease, hospital epidemiology, and graduate medical education. He was a graduate of Boston Latin School 1959, Harvard College 1963, and Harvard School of Medicine 1967. Dr. Garibaldi performed his Infectious Disease Fellowship from 1969-1971 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. From 1971-1981, he was a faculty member at the University of Utah Medical Center, serving many roles including that of hospital epidemiologist. In 1981, Dr. Garibaldi joined the faculty at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1981-1997, Chief of Infectious Disease Division from 1981-1990, and Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program from 1982-1997. From 1997-2006, Dr. Garibaldi served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Garibaldi was first and foremost a clinician. His reputation as a skilled diagnostician and compassionate caregiver made him a primary care physician of choice for fellow doctors, hospital staff members, and the famous and the poor alike. In his tenure as Internal Medicine Residency Program Director, Dr. Garibaldi was a much-loved teacher and mentor to generations of doctors. His stature as a medical educator was reflected in many teaching awards from the Internal Medicine Residency Program and the recent dedication of the Richard A. Garibaldi Humanitarianism in Medicine Award by the UConn School of Medicine. As Chairman of Medicine, Dr. Garibaldi guided the Department through challenging times with diligence and devotion to the professional environment and to advance the academic mission of the Health Center. He left an indelible mark on the University of Connecticut Health Center and the region's medical community. The family is grateful for the exceptional care provided by the physicians, nurses and staff at UConn Health Center and Dana Farber Cancer Institute who cared for Dr. Garibaldi attentively and compassionately throughout the course of his prolonged illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT. A memorial service will be conducted at the University of Connecticut Health Center at a date to be announced. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Richard A.
