Paul Kuhn

KUHN, Paul A. Born on July 9, 1930 in Fargo, ND, the son of Kenneth and Nora Ostgaard Kuhn, Paul A. Kuhn died on Thursday January 13, 2005 after battling cancer. Paul leaves his wife of 45 years, Jane Rowen Kuhn. Paul and Jane were well known for organizing and leading travel groups to many parts of the world, including Kenya, Russia, Vietnam, Italy, Alaska, and others too numerous to list. For over 30 years they escorted an annual visit to Cinnamon Bay, St. John, Virgin Islands, leaving a lasting mark on that community, and making many lasting friendships. He graduated from Carleton College, Northfield MN, in 1952, having served as class president and editor of the newspaper. He was also a member of the varsity hockey team. Recently Paul served on the 50th Reunion Committee for his class. He served as a radar and computer systems specialist in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and then came to Connecticut, where he worked for General Electric in Plainville. In 1962 Paul joined the Rowen Leahy Company, a distributor of construction equipment, and was later named president. During the 1970's he served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Equipment Distributors, a national association, as the New England Director. In the late 1980's, he co-founded Yankee Equipment Company, of which he was a director and vice president. After his retirement in 1990, Paul devoted much time to the Elmwood Senior Center, arranging and leading day excursions for the members. Having three children who attended Loomis Chaffee during the late 1970's and early 1980's, Paul and Jane served as Presidents of the Friends of Loomis Chaffee during 1977/78. He was active in the League of Women Voters, and functioned as the League's Treasurer. He was a Corporator of St. Francis Hospital, serving as honorary co-chair, along with his wife, of "Miracles 2002". Additionally, Paul was a member of the Hartford Canoe Club, the Old Guard, the 1892 Club, the Rush Light Club, and the Vermont Woodlands Assn. Paul is also survived by a daughter, Julie Kuhn Macdonald and her husband, Jim, a son, John K. Kuhn, and John's wife, Meg Dower Kuhn, and a son-in-law, Derrik F. Woodbury, M.D. of Tucson, AZ. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kate Kuhn Woodbury, M.D, also a cancer victim. Paul also leaves eight grandchildren, of whom he was very proud: Carson and Rex Woodbury; Riley, Michaela Kate, and Cara Macdonald; and Kate, Declan and Charlotte Kuhn. He also leaves his two brothers, their wives, and a nephew, Martin and Joanne Kuhn of Waterloo, Ontario, and Bill and Eva Kuhn, and their son Joe, of London, Ontario. Additionally he leaves a cousin, Tom Shorney, of Oklahoma City, OK, and another cousin Norma Erickson, of Wayzata, MN. Calling hours will be at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, on Monday, January 17, from 4-7 p.m. A mass will be held at St. Timothy's Church, 1116 N. Main St., West Hartford, on Tuesday, January 18, at 11:30 a.m. The family requests that donations be made in the name of Paul A. Kuhn to the Kate Kuhn Woodbury '78 Scholarship for Excellence Fund at the Loomis Chaffee School, the St. Francis Hospital Fund for Clinical Cancer Research or to Carleton College for the general fund. Burial will be private. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the oncology doctors and nurses of St. Francis Hospital for the wonderful care given to Paul.
