Michael Peter Szoke

Michael Peter "Chief" Szoke of Berlin, Connecticut returned home to God on May 18th knowing his family was surrounding him with love. Michael was 88 years old. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene Petruska Szoke and two sisters, Brenda Clausnitzer and Marge Eveland. He is survived by two sisters, Helen Sticka, of Sharonville, OH and Irene Kain of Mays Landing, NJ. He is also survived by his daughter and son- in-law Andrea and Richard Lazaroski of Bristol, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael A. and Marilyn Szoke of Sterling, VA, granddaughter and her husband, Meredith and Greg Nash of West Hartford, grandson and his wife, Anthony and Jennifer Lazaroski of Montgomery, IL, and granddaughter Holly Szoke of Sterling, VA. He also leaves his beloved great granddaughters, Michaela Clark of West Hartford and Emerson Lazaroski of Montgomery, IL. A longtime resident of New Jersey, Michael was a career police officer and the chief of police in South River and Montgomery Township, NJ. He taught at the police academy and was the recipient of several police and safety grants. He sponsored clubs and programs for young people throughout his career, including a hot rod club. He was an avid ham radio operator who worked all over the world. Known as "Chief " to many, Michael was a friendly, happy person who loved to be around people. He always had a ready smile and a joke to tell. After reading and writing, his grandchildren were his great loves, his pride and joys. He took delight in all their accomplishments. He also loved his two grandnephews, Princeton and Cameron Ballarino of FL. Thank you to the caregivers at Ledgecrest Nursing Home who lovingly took care of Michael over the last 2 and a half years. Also, to Masonicare Hospice who gave support and comfort to the end of his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ledgecrest Nursing Home in Berlin, CT or Masonicare Hospice in East Hartford, CT. Calling hours will be on Friday, May 25th from 10 AM until 11 AM with a service immediately following at 11 AM at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford, Connecticut.
