Leonard J. Quartin

Leonard J. Quartin, 90, of West Hartford beloved husband of 60 years to Nicky Quartin entered into eternal peace on Saturday, September 18, 2010. He was born February 12, 1920 to Charles and Pauline Quartin in New York City. He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. Directly out of College he began working at Kalart Victor Corp., where he met and fell in love with his future wife Nicky. In 1947, Kalart moved from Stamford to Plainville and Len was appointed plant manager, responsible for all operations necessary for the production of its photo products. In 1957, he was elected vice president of Kalart Victor Corp. As a result of his leadership in the export market, Kalart sold it's product in over 100 countries throughout the world and received the U.S. Department of Commerce Excellence Award. In 1967 Len was appointed President of Kalart Victor Corp. He was appointed to the CT regional Export Expansion Council, a Member of the American Society of Tool Engineers, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers and had served on the board of the National Audio Visual Assoc. and the National Association of Photographic Manufacturers. He continued in the position of president until his retirement in 1990 after 53 years of service. Len had always been an outstanding student and graduated with honors. He was especially proud of his Latin Medal and was a champion of education in general. His position in the company allowed him to travel extensively. This afforded Len the opportunity to practice his vast language skills and he soon became fluent in four languages. In his leisure time, Len was both an avid stamp and coin collector. He loved to garden, enjoyed the sun, and spent many vacations in the Caribbean. His happiest moments were taking his 3 children deep sea fishing, being his son's Indian Guides Leader, watching Sunday football with his kids, and spoiling his favorite cat Stella. Len loved to be around his children and 4 beautiful granddaughters. Although very proud of his accomplishments as a businessman, his greatest joy was his family. Len will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Nicky, his loving children and their spouses; Daniel Quartin and his wife Tamara, Cinde "Brie" Quartin and her partner Kim, his four granddaughters, Tammy, Vikki, Ashley, Danielle, step granddaughter Kelsey Whitefield, and his great grandson Preston. He was predeceased by his brother George, sister Sally, and beloved son Bruce H. Quartin. Len's family would like to graciously thank Len's wonderful caregiver Mazeline Bennett and the entire staff at Atria Hamilton Heights for their care over the past 2 years. We would also like to thank Dr. Ann Kenny at UCONN Health Center for her longtime guidance and compassion dealing with his illness.
