Laurence Bettle Huston Jr.

Laurence Bettle Huston, Jr., 87, of Bloomfield, died on February 3rd at Hartford Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, PA on October 17, 1927, he was the son of Laurence Bettle and Esther (Burns) Huston. He graduated from the William Penn Charter School in 1945 (K -12) and from Princeton University in 1949. He married the love of his life, Nancy Dillman Sallada of Philadelphia in 1950 and enjoyed 63 years of marriage until Nancy’s passing in 2013. Mr. Huston spent his entire professional career with Aetna Life Insurance Company, starting in 1949 as a Home Office Representative in Newark, NJ, then later in Philadelphia and New York City. In 1957, he moved his family to West Hartford where he worked in the Home Office and upon his retirement in 1986, was an Assistant Vice President in the Group Division. He was a proud member of the Hartford Golf Club for over 50 years and served as President from 1971 to 1973. He was a Trustee of the Kingswood Oxford School and a member of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church. He enjoyed the Old Guard of West Hartford in his later years. From 1990 to 2002, Nancy and Larry lived in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL where they were members of the Sawgrass Country Club and the Sawgrass Chapel. In 2002, they moved back to West Hartford to spend invaluable time with their daughter and grandchildren. Throughout his adult life, Larry was very active in golf. Not only as a player, but he also was President of the Jr. Sr. Golfing Society of CT and a member of the CT Seniors Golf Assoc., American Seniors Golf Assoc., the Southern Seniors Golf. Assoc. and the Florida Seniors Golf. Assoc. He was an avid lover of all sports, but particularly his beloved Philadelphia Phillies and the UConn Women’s Huskies. In later years, Larry always looked forward to playing bridge with his buddies at the Hartford Golf Club. He and Nancy loved to travel and were subscribers for years to The Bushnell and Goodspeed. Mr. Huston is survived by his daughter, Wendy H. Gabree of Avon, his grandson, Scott Gabree and his wife Michele and great-grandson, Henry, of Somerville, MA and his granddaughter, Lauren Gabree of Los Angeles, CA. He was predeceased by his son, Laurence Bettle Huston, III and his brother, William Perot Huston, II. A memorial service will be held in the spring at Asylum Hill Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association.
