John E. Cartland Jr.

CARTLAND, John E., Jr., M.D. John E. Cartland, Jr., M.D., died Sunday July 25, 2004. He was the son of John E. Cartland M.D. and Genevieve E. Dwinal Cartland. Born in Kingfield, ME October 24, 1917, he graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn, ME, Bowdoin College in 1939, where he was President of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1943. He was assigned by the 7th Army to service in France and Germany during World War II. After the War he performed his internship and residency at Hartford Hospital, where he was the first pediatric resident in the hospital's history, following which he entered private pediatric practice in the Hartford area. He became president of the staff of Hartford Hospital in 1972. In 1972, he was a member of the U.S. Medical Team for the summer Olympic games in Munich, Germany. He retired from private practice in 1984 and became the Director of Pupil Health Services for the New Britain School System, uniting both his love of sports and of children, until 1989. During his entire life he was an avid supporter of Bowdoin College, becoming President of its Alumni Council in 1964 and an Overseer in 1976. Following his retirement from New Britain, he became involved with Literacy Volunteers and tutoring students at The West Middle School. He was also President of the Hezekaih Beardsley Pediatric Club, President of the Pediatric Section of the Connecticut Medical Society and a longtime member of the Country Club of Farmington. In addition, he was an avid bridge player and a member of the Old Guard. He was predeceased by his first wife Kay and his son Charles. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Cross Flynn Cartland; and three children, John E. III and his wife Lucy of West Hartford, Richard E. and his wife, Elaine also of West Hartford; and his daughter, Carolyn R. of Bloomfield. In addition he has four grandchildren, Kathryn Cartland Anderson and her husband, Kenneth of Windham, ME, Elizabeth F. Cartland of Boston, MA, Christopher J. Cartland of West Hartford and Timothy P. Cartland, also of West Hartford. He is also survived by a great grandson, Holden E. Anderson of Windham, ME. Also left to mourn are Polly Davies of Boston, Frederick J. Flynn III of Morristown, TN, Elizabeth Cooper of Glastonbury, and Margery Rosenblatt of Dedham, MA and their families. Services will be held on Thursday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, Hartford Hospital or Asylum Hill Congregational Church.
