George J. McGauley Jr.

George J. McGauley Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away on April 11, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on May 31, 1934, he was the son of the late Helen O’Leary and George J. McGauley. George grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. A proud veteran, he served his country with distinction in the armed forces as a paratrooper in the renowned 82nd Airborne Division. Following his military service, he went on to earn his degree from Fairfield University, graduating in 1959. George enjoyed a long and successful career at the Travelers Corporation, from which he eventually retired as a respected financial officer. At the center of George’s world was his family. He shared 64 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joan Whalen McGauley. He took immense pride and joy in his children and grandchildren, and his legacy of love lives on through them. He is survived by his three children: Mark McGauley and his wife Leslie Sutton; Suzanne Vide and her husband John; and Faith Whitman and her husband Chris. He was the immensely proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Sam and Gaia Sutton McGauley; Matthew and Julia Vide; and Quinn, Lily, and Maddy Whitman. He is also survived by his sister, Ellenmary McGauley Richards, nephews, Jeffrey (Sunny) Richards, and Gregory (Lindsay) Richards. In his retirement, George embraced life to the fullest. He was a dedicated gardener who found peace in nature, and an avid world traveler who explored 20 different countries alongside treasured friends. Music and camaraderie were central to his later years; for 25 years, he was a devoted member of The Old Guard, where he joyfully led the Beefeater Chorus with his strong baritone voice. George also possessed a deeply generous spirit, quietly serving his community by delivering Meals on Wheels to local residents for 20 years. In 2020, George retired to Duncaster, where he continued to share his warmth, stories, and unforgettable voice with those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant Street in West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Friends and family are welcome to visit at 9:15 am prior to the Mass.
