Emma Herbst

HERBST, Emma Emma Herbst, 96, of West Hartford, beloved wife of the late John Herbst, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Haven Healthcare of West Hartford. Born in Gottschee, Austria, daughter of the late Rudolf and Maria Schneider Hoge. She came to the United States as a teenager with her parents where she was naturalized a US Citizen. She returned to Europe to marry her childhood sweetheart, John. Emma returned to the United States with her family in 1946 and lived in Ridgewood, NY until 1995. In Ridgewood, they raised and educated two loving sons and were involved in many social and charitable activities. They were very proactive in teaching their family their ethnic heritage. One of Emma?s favorite pleasures was cooking large ethnic dinners for her ever growing family, and the tradition is carried on by her daughters in law. Emma moved to West Hartford in October, 1995 where in her twilight years she was blessed with much love and contentment. Emma was a devoted wife and mother, a loving mother in law and aunt but above all she was the loving Nana to all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She touched so many lives and will be dearly missed by all that knew her. She is survived by two sons and their spouses, Walter R. and Maria Melz Herbst of Wayne, NJ, and John J. and Anita Schuele Herbst of West Hartford. Her only daughter Maria died as an infant. She is also survived by five grandchildren, their spouses and eight great grandchildren, Walter and Margaret Herbst, and their children Michael and Diana of Mahwa, NJ, Robert and Lucinda Herbst, and their children Jackson and Tessa, of Napoleon, MO, James and Debra Herbst, and their children Eric and Andrew of Franklin Lakes, NJ, Luis and Cynthia Martinez and their son Derek of Glastonbury, and John and Britta Herbst, and their son Austin of Manchester. She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Hoge, two sisters, Netti Wittreich and Albina Verderber. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, 285 Church St. Hartford. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, NY.
